One of the first Christmases I remember is the year we got our Nintendo. This was my first introduction to two little plumbers named Mario and Luigi (I do recall that Duck Hunt was also included w/ the Mario Bros. game). Christmas seemed so simple back then. I'm not sure if it was just because of my youthful naivety or if the world was actually different in 1988. I just knew that Christmas was a special time of year! While I'm sure kids today share this same sentiment, it seems that my perspective has changed as I notice the increasing commercialism of the holiday season. I realize that I am not the first to come to this realization. As I've grown older, though, I have been trying to make a commitment to myself not to do things "just to do them" and to realize the purpose behind them. This applies to all of my experiences - socially, spiritually, mentally, etc. I feel as though we go through motions from day-to-day, month-to-month, year-to-year, and that the sum of those motions equates to our lives! Perhaps this is just the way it is, but I'm convinced life demands more spontaneity. More purposefullness.
So as to tie this back into Christmas and bring this post to a close - whether you wake up to a new Nintendo this year (or whatever your special gift might be) or just friends and family on Christmas morning - make sure that you remember Christ and the gift that he was to us some 2,000 years ago! Not to be cliche, but don't forget that you can't spell Christmas w/o Christ!
Merry Christmas!!
A fun, last-day-of-school activity!
